AQUAMAN

Aquaman: I'd love to say that this one was a labor of love, but the truth is he was just a labor. Being a fan of Aquaman from the 70's, I hate his hippy look as much as I do the fact that Kyle Rayner replaced Hal Jordan, but these animated shows have a way of making the most uncool aspects of the DC Universe... well... cool! This figure actually started out as a protest to the Justice League's use of "hippy" Aquaman as opposed to the classic Aquaman seen in the STAS episode "Fish Story". I stripped down a Mattel Superman and altered his head in an attempt to make an animated rendition of the classic Aquaman. Unfortunately I've been having some trouble getting spray primer to fix itself to these new Mattel figures and the primer ended up being this goopy, sticky crud even after I painted him up. Disapointed, but not discouraged I stripped him down using Pine-Sol which unfortunately loosened all of the sculpting work as well. I really didn't want to do all of that same work over again (and I was beginning to warm up to the animated "hippy" some after watching some JL repeats) so I decided to redo him as he's seen here. I used the maquette as a loose reference point. I thought about sculpting him a removable cape out of Superflex Sculpey to makehim look a bit more regal, but never got around to it. He was a lot of work considering that he was a whole other completed custom before he was the one seen here, but he was worth it. I really like this guy.
