DRAAGA

Draaga: I'm so pleased that the Timm style is REALLY possesed of major Kirby flavor in Justice League. Draaga looks like something right out of NEW GODS- from his Apocolyptian helmet to his Mister Miracle-esque belt to his ravaged dog soldier face. He was a ton of work, but a lot of fun. I made him because he was just so dang cool! His voice gave me the shivers and I love the whole gladiator feel. Not to mention I'm almost positive we'll never see a figure of him.
I used a Capture Net Superman body with a completely original head and helmet made from Sculpey and styrene. Supes' arms were amputated at the elbow and his lower arms were sculpted from scratch using epoxy putty (Gepaxio) while the muscle detail of the upper arms were filled in and sanded. His hands are from some Japanese robot PVC figure, his shoulder plate is Sculpey, the chain is from a Thundercats Panthro nunchukku, and the various boot, glove and belt details are cut styrene and putty.
I'm pretty happy with the result, but scale wise he's not as accurate as I'd wanted him to be. I think his head is a bit too big and perhaps is arms are not bulky enough. He towers over my JL Superman which I like, although I'm not sure if that's totally accurate either.
Overall I love the figure and I'm pretty proud of the fact that I needed to use every material and technique that I've learned so far to finish him so he's really a complete representation of my current stable of customizing knowledge up to this point. He's also representative of a technical step forward for me. One of the major obstacles I've been facing in using the new Mattel figures for bases is the lack of usable male heads. I've never been able to effectively sculpt a head from scratch before and I thought Draaga's ravaged, uneven face was a great way to get my feet wet. I'm somewhat happy with the results and I'm going to try and move further on my next piece. Plus he looks cool on my shelf!
